Description

Organized as a consolidation of several major utility and fuel companies in 1930, the United Gas Corporation was one of the first natural gas transmission companies established in the American South. Second only in size to Gulf Oil, Union Gas was headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana until the company’s hostile takeover by Pennzoil in 1968.

This map shows the assets and infrastructure of the United Gas System as of December 31, 1953. Company and competitor’s gas lines stretch across the Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi to Pensacola and as far north as Dallas and Central Mississippi. Splashes of green show the vast fields of oil and natural gas that supplied the corporate behemoth, while plants and delivery stations are noted according to the legend in the lower center.

Published in Shreveport, Louisiana in late 1953 or early 1954 by the Mapping Department of the United Gas Corporation.
