Description

This interesting folding map of northwestern Michigan was issued with the local tourist in mind, and shows information on transportation routes, geographic features, and the location of several notable resorts. The region was popular among outdoor enthusiasts and city dwellers eager to escape the heat in the early 20th century, much as it is today.

The accompanying introduction makes an even bolder claim. “Northern Michigan has, since the Red Man, been a veritable paradise for the seeker after healthful recreation, camp-life, or the invigorating enjoyment of a good fishing trip.” Inset maps of Mackinac, Sault Ste. Marie, and Les Cheneaux Islands provide further detail on particular areas of contemporary interest.

The map was included in a promotional brochure issued by the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway, shown in bold within the image. Apart from advertisements promoting amenities along company routes, the pamphlet includes numerous photographs, brief summaries of major attractions, and a comprehensive list of local hotels.
