Description

This charming little celebration of New England’s maritime history was designed and published by Edward Rowe Snow in the early 1960s. The somewhat haphazard set was likely compiled and sold directly by Snow himself, as it features some irregular margins, several paper varieties, and other hints that it was produced on a piecemeal or small-scale basis. The collection consists of the following items:

  • New England Sea Drama – a signed book, 62 pages, that offers a text-based tour of the coast
  • The Town of Boston in New England – A 17″ x 12″ reprint of a 1722 street plan of Boston
  • United States Coast Guard Boston District (17.75″ x 8.5)
  • An Historical & Pictorial Map of Fort Warren (17.75″ x 12″)
  • An Historic and Pictorial Map of Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay (11.75″ x 16″)
  • Map of the Isles of Shoals formerly known as Smiths Iles (11.9″ x 15.5″)
  • The Islands of Boston Harbor (17.5″ x 16.5″)
  • An Historical and Pictorial Map of Casco Bay (23″ x 17.4″)
  • A Map of Romantic Boston Bay and Cape Cod (22.4″ x 17.4″)

Edward Rowe Snow (1902 – 1982) was a New England author, historian, and artist best known for his works on maritime history and coastal folklore. Born in Massachusetts to a legacy of seafarers, he published over 100 books and articles, many of which focused on shipwrecks, pirates, and tales from the heyday of New England’s naval past. He was also famous for his role as the “Flying Santa,” dropping gifts to lighthouse keepers and their families by plane each Christmas. Rowe designed numerous pictorial maps as part of his impressive corpus of work, generally focusing on his beloved home region along the Atlantic coast.
