Description

This lovely map of New England and Eastern Canada was lithographed in Buffalo by the Matthews-Northrup Works in 1915 to highlight the lines of the Boston & Maine Railroads. Eight different companies are represented by the bold red lines, reflecting diversified company interests and connecting routes.

Tourists were a particularly important component of the railroad’s business, especially during the summer as city dwellers would flee their urban homes for the cooler coast, lake, and mountain regions depicted within the image. A robust transportation network of electric and steam railroads, steamship routes, stage lines, automobile roads, and canals, identified by the legend in the lower center, facilitated this seasonal migration.

Towns, resorts, geographic features, and other locations of interest are labeled throughout. An inset map in the lower right shows the region around the White Mountains of Vermont, nicknamed “The American Switzerland”. Shaded topography, labeled mountain peaks, and numerous points of elevation data provide a detailed overview of the mountainous terrain.
