Description
The Penn Central was a (relatively) short lived railroad that operated between 1968 and 1976 as a combination of the Penn RR, New York Central RR and New York, New Haven and Hartford RR. The merger between the first two companies (the last would be added in 1969) can be seen on this map of the company rail system issued the same year of its founding.
The lines of eight separate regions are color coded, with an index identifying the divisions and headquarters of each. The map exhibits an interesting and diverse mix of rail use; from heavy commercial traffic along the Hudson River to many small spurs throughout mining country in Pennsylvania.
