Description
This interesting little map highlights the extensive infrastructure in place to support maritime navigation along the Great Lakes. Dozens of light-emitting structures (existing and planned) and fog signals dot the shores of Lake Michigan. Inset maps show details around the Straits of Mackinac and Chicago, with the latter presenting an early configuration of the city’s breakwater system.
The map was designed by the Army Corps of Engineers and published by the Government Printing Office in 1893, originally for inclusion in the Annual Report of the Light-House Board of the United States to the Secretary of the Treasury.
