Description
“This booklet is published by the Recreational Development Committee of the New England Council, an executive and advisory organization representing the six New England States, to provide helpful and reliable information relative to the varied opportunities of New England – the Nation’s Playground.” – intro.
This fascinating Depression-era guidebook was issued to a budget-conscious audience considering a vacation across the ‘Recreationland’ of New England. Twenty-five pages provide descriptive text and photographs about locations of interest, geographic features, recreational opportunities, and ‘New England Hospitality.’
The highlight of the booklet is a folding color map, illustrated by James D. Powell and copywritten in 1932 by the New England Council. It provides an engaging and amusing overview of the region and includes a list of other related publications. Perhaps the most convincing argument can be found in the decorative compass rose – “People Live Four Years Longer in New England.”
