Description

This finely engraved antique map presents the grounds of the historic Mount Auburn Cemetery, located in the Boston suburbs of Cambridge and Watertown. The avenues and paths alluded to in the title might seem unimportant, but they were a revelation in posthumous memorialization when first laid out.

Dedicated in 1831, Mount Auburn was one of America’s first garden cemeteries, in which a tranquil retreat was carefully planned amid ample space (as opposed to crowded urban and church-based graveyards). The elaborate entrance, designed in the Egyptian Revival style and still standing today, is pictured in the lower left.

The map was originally copyrighted in 1839 by Nathaniel Dearborn for inclusion in his Mount Auburn Cemetery Catalog. This is a later edition (probably the 6th or 7th), published in Boston in 1849.
