Description
“In 1913, the present Trail was first engineered for automobile traffic. With major improvements in 1948, 1950, and 1954, today’s modern highway is a tribute both to the Indians who first traveled the route and to modern road engineering.” – Text, verso.
This fun little brochure was issued around 1955 by the Mohawk and Taconic Trail Association of Charlemont, Massachusetts. It shows the route of ‘The Highway of History’, alternatively promoted as the Mohawk Trail, Route 2, and the Scenic Gateway to New England. The beautiful drive is shown through a somewhat rudimentary road map that notes landmarks, campsites, prominent geographic features, and fishing spots. Several profiles of a Native American warrior reflect the route’s history as an important indigenous path, in use for centuries. Accompanying photographs and persuasive content encourage motorists to see the sights and follow in the footsteps of history.
