Description

Tourists eager to escape the summer heat flocked to resorts across the Great Lakes during the early 20th century (many still to today), and prior to the widespread use of the automobile, the primary method of transportation was by train. (Though the car was well established by 1929, the condition of local roads in more remote areas still necessitated the use of wagons in certain areas).

The Pere Marquette Railway was one of several companies that operated in the region, and this brochure was issued to promote use of their lines. Photographs of attractions in Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey and other areas along the route are accompanied by descriptive text acclaiming their beauty. Timetables, price lists, an index of hotels, and lists of hunting lodges, golf courses, and summer camps are included along with a page-sized map of the railroad network across the upper Midwest.

Published in Chicago by Poole Brothers, Inc. in 1929 on behalf of the Pere Marquette Railway.
