Description

This double sided map was created by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr. for inclusion in his Modern Atlas, published in Philadelphia by J.A. Butler & Co. in 1877. The group of states depicted across the primary image and verso is known collectively as the Midwest – Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, the Dakotas (still a unified territory at the time of publication) and Nebraska.

Each map emphasizes the railroads available in each state and depicts topography in simple hachure. Large towns, geographic features, and counties are all individually labeled.
