Map of the Southern States

Reconstruction-Era map of the southern United States.

This colorful map of the southern United States covers the area east of Texas and south of Kentucky and Virginia. Counties are colored individually while prominent geographic features, towns, transportation routes, forts and other important locations are individually labeled.

An inset map of the southern portions of Florida, including the Everglades, is available in the lower right. The “Mouths of the Mississippi River” are also prominently featured.

At the time of publication, the states shown were undergoing a dramatic transformation in the form of post-Civil War Reconstruction policies, and most former Confederate or prewar Southern office holders were disqualified from voting or holding office.
