Description
This charming early 20th-century timetable brochure, intended for an upscale vacationing audience, was published by the Poole Brothers of Chicago in 1908 on behalf of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company. A centerfold map highlights the firm’s lines in operation across the Great Lakes. Numerous resort towns are listed along the coastline and insets along the top of the page show the area around Mackinac, Les Cheneaux Islands, and the Straits of Mackinaw.
The verso of the map presents an interesting half-sheet cross-section of the ‘practically unsinkable’ and newly-launched steamer ‘City of Cleveland.’ Over sixty elements are numbered and labeled throughout the carefully illustrated image, which also lists the luxurious features and impressive furnishings – 3,400 pieces of silver service! The contents also contain extensive timetables, rate details, and extensive descriptions of the lavish accommodations aboard ship.
