Description

This attractive map of southeastern Michigan and northwestern Ohio, published around 1916 by the Detroit United Railway (D.U.R.), offers a fascinating look at the high-water mark of interurban electric transit in the American Midwest. At its peak, the D.U.R. operated over six hundred miles of electrified regional railways, connecting the industrial hub of Detroit with outlying agricultural and manufacturing centers across Southeastern Michigan, Northern Ohio, and Ontario. Vibrant red line work highlights primary passenger and freight routes running west to Kalamazoo and Jackson, north through Flint to Saginaw and Bay City, and south down to Toledo. Distinct dashed lines denote freight truck routes, illustrating the early 20th-century shift as interurban companies attempted to compete with expanding highway transport and regional motor freight lines.

The map is delightfully detailed with pictorial vignettes of smoke-stacked factories, lake steamboats, and localized industrial hubs that defined the boom of the early Great Lakes economy. Beyond serving commuter traffic between urban centers like Ann Arbor, Pontiac, and Port Huron, the network catered heavily to recreational riders heading to the beaches and resorts along Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, and Lake Erie. The network also provided critical infrastructure to the region’s growing manufacturing sector, which kicked into high gear with the arrival of war in Europe. Descriptive text and a small map of Motown on the verso capture ‘The Electric Way Into and Out of Detroit.’
