Description

This attractive and colorful bird’s eye view highlights the extensive interurban system available on the Atlantic seaboard in the early 20th century. The image includes a broad coastal region east of Worcester, Massachusetts between Providence, Rhode Island and Portland, Maine.

Bright red lines representing the electric railroads (steam are in black) are shown connecting the various towns and cities, while the countryside is depicted as an idyllic landscape with pictorial topography and geographic features. Parks, one of the most popular destinations for rail travelers, are also highlighted in red. Numerous inset maps show related connections in areas immediately adjacent, with a larger one in the upper left focusing on Boston. Several contemporary advertisements can be found on the verso and back cover, including one for Cape Porpoise Casino on the Atlantic Shore Line Railway.

The map was lithographed in Boston by George H. Walker & Company and published in 1904 by the New England Street Railway Club.
