This black and white road map of New England was published in 1925 as part of Mixer’s Motor Maps and Tours, a regional guidebook for motorists. While the book has unfortunately been lost, the map represents a fascinating period of growth in automobile tourism.
The introduction of the Ford Model-T in 1908 opened the way to private vehicle ownership for the middle class and the Federal Highway Act of 1921 greatly encouraged the development of numbered highways across America. The map labels these routes across the states of New York, Massachusetts, Maine, New, Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Recommended accommodations are prominently listed in several locations between Atlantic City and Dixville Notch and a table in the lower left lists the best places to cross the Hudson River by car. The verso shows two-dozen captioned photographs of various sites along ‘The Ideal Tour.’
