“Canada’s Choice Lake Shore Development”

Description
This ephemeral flyer was issued around 1927 by the Buffalo Heights Development Company to promote its upcoming neighborhood in Fort Erie, Ontario (just across the Niagara River from Buffalo, New York). Extravagant text, photographs, and a centerfold street plan highlight the incredible amenities available to prospective buyers. A map on the back cover shows ‘Canada’s High, Dry, and Popular Lake Shore Development’, a mere 4 miles from Fort Erie (as the crow flies). According to Brock University,
“Buffalo Heights Development Co. was an American development company from Buffalo that wanted to build a model community near Fort Erie, Canada, similar to affluent communities in Buffalo. With the opening of the Peace Bridge in 1927, many believed that growth and development in Fort Erie would follow. However, the stock market crash in 1929 provided a major setback to the project. The project was never completed, although remnants of the design of the subdivision still remain.”
