Description
This multifaceted travel guide was issued to promote U.S. Highway 84 between Brunswick, Georgia and its juncture with U.S. 71 near Shreveport, Louisiana. The top of the sheet offers a road map of the U.S. with Highway 84 as part of a larger transcontinental route, highlighted in red and connecting with U.S. 80 (at Shreveport). Immediately below is a relatively simple strip map (promoted as “Silhou-Vision”) that highlights various stops along the ‘Shortest Route to Points West.’ Numerous restaurants, hotels, and other local businesses are advertised – an interesting snapshot of the local Deep South economy in the late 1950s.
Published by the Highway Map Publishing Company of Columbus, Georgia. Undated, but likely issued shortly after the completion of the Jim Woodruff Dam (1957), which was hastily sketched into the uppermost image.
