Description

This fascinating promotional piece offers helpful ‘Tips to Travelers’ headed along the north-south route of U.S. Highway 41, which connects the frigid Upper Peninsula of Michigan to the warm beaches of Miami and southern Florida. A somewhat simple (if cluttered) strip map is divided into five segments, each noting towns, distances between points, and major geographic features. Recommended hotels, restaurants, and attractions are provided adjacent to many of the stops along the way – giving the impression that the advertisements are more important than information about the route itself! Further advertisements and copy text, organized by state, are provided on the verso.

Published in 1941 by the Highway Travel Service of Waterloo, Iowa. One of several similar maps issued by the company during the 1930s and 1940s, each promoting specific businesses along popular seasonal highway routes. Of particular interest are the specific names given to the proprietors of many such enterprises – personalized service at its finest!
