Thoreau’s Easterbrook Country [and] Thoreau’s Rivers Concord, Massachusetts

This wonderful pair of rustic maps uses the diary of the famous poet Henry David Thoreau to track his movements in the area around Concord, Massachusetts. Apart from an education at Harvard and about a dozen other trips elsewhere, ‘The Judge’ spent his entire life in and around Concord, which includes the famous Walden Pond, a site that can still be visited today.

One sheet emphasizes the river system as it would have existed in Thoreau’s day, with brooks, meadows, and even bathing spots individually labeled. Place names are listed alphabetically along with their corresponding dated journal entries. The second map shows Easterbrook Country, a densely forested area a few miles north of Concord today known as Estabrook Woods.
