Description
The Louisiana Purchase Exposition was a World’s Fair held in St. Louis in 1904 to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of…. you guessed it! The Louisiana Purchase. Nearly 20 million visitors attended the fair, which was held at Forest Park between April and December.
This lithographed pocket map shows the grounds of the fair and labels each building individually, as well as entrances and nearby transportation options. The verso features an inset map of St. Louis and numerous facts about the exposition.
The map was issued by the St. Louis Press and Publicity Department, making it an interesting intersection of civic promotion, local advertising and World’s Fair souvenir. Copywritten in 1903 by the J.N. Matthews Company of Buffalo and published in St. Louis by the Woodward & Tiernan Printing Company. Includes a ‘Condensed History of the Louisiana Purchase’.
