The Forest Fires in the West
$75.00
Woodcut engraved print from the December 2, 1871 edition of Harper’s Weekly.
1 in stock
Description
This misleading print shows towers of flame rapidly consuming western forests, while crowds of helpless farmers and loggers flee in wagons and on foot in the foreground. The “west” in this case is Wisconsin and Michigan – the Peshtigo Fire took place on October 8th and is the deadliest wildfire in American history, claiming over 1,100 lives.
You may not of heard of it because the news coverage was largely overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire, which started on the exact same day.
