Description

This interesting circular was published in Topeka, Kansas in 1877 to promote emigration along the lines of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. The Arkansas River Valley in Kansas is billed as “The Best Thing in the West” on the front page, which shows numerous graphs highlighting the abundant increase in local agricultural production.

Opening the newspaper presents a map of the route created by Rand McNally, noting the line between Kansas City in the East and Sargents (possibly the town of Medway) in the West. The vast land grants of the ATSF available for purchase are shaded on either side of the route, offering a variety of landscapes to prospective settlers. Further descriptive text highlights various financial opportunities, abundant water power, and other advantages.

An interesting relic from the vast westward migration of the second half of the 19th century. Apparently distributed in Cincinnati, according to the rubberstamp applied by the ATSF agent on the verso. The circular is uncommon and noted in only one example in WorldCat, at Harvard University. A similar edition published the year earlier is also listed with 9 institutions. OCLC# 861798632.
