Description

This charming view of West Virginia University shows a quaint perspective of the campus prior to American involvement in World War II. Created mostly by hand (with the apparent exception of the title block in the upper right), the image presents primary academic buildings, student housing, athletic facilities, transportation options, and more.

Of notable interest is the original Mountaineer Field, the ‘Loafing Place’, and Ernie’s (a local restaurant). A number of figures are shown engaged in a variety of activities, including football, canoeing the Monongahela River, and swimming in Cheat Lake.

Probably prepared in 1935, based on the presence of the Men’s Dorm (completed that year) and not yet renamed. Issued compliments of the Book Exchange, a local bookstore that began operations in Morgantown in 1932 and is still in operation today.
