Description

This is a fine example of a scarce pocket map issued in Boston, Massachusetts by the Passenger Department of The Bay State Street Railway Company around 1917. It shows the expansive streetcar and trolley network, self-proclaimed at 940 miles, just a few years before its assets were acquired by the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway Company (1919).

The routes of the Bay Street Railway Company are represented by bold lines stretching across the image from Newburyport, Haverhill, and Nashua, New Hampshire in the north to Newport, Rhode Island in the south. Assets such as power stations and car houses are identified in the legend below the title, which also notes the lines used to identify steam railroads, steamer routes, and electric railways. A condensed index at the bottom of the sheet lists the principal points reached by the Bay State lines and their connections.
