Description

“A summer home along the shore of a beautiful lake in Wisconsin is one of the best investments in good health you can make.” [Text on verso]

This map invites Midwesterners from urban centers like Milwaukee, Chicago, and Green Bay to escape the summer heat and take a trip to the “GREATEST FISHING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD” along the lines of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Scores of lakes are scattered across the North Woods region (Ideal for Summer Homes!) straddling Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin.

The routes of the “North Western” are highlighted in red and lodges, campsites, and resorts are labeled throughout the image. An inset in the lower left shows the depicted area and CNW connections between the Twin Cities and Chicago. Several photographs reflect idyllic circumstances for the contemporary outdoor enthusiast.

The verso continues the theme, with additional text and images describing canoe trips, winter activities, golf courses, and much more. Of particular interest is the captioned photo of waterplaning, a predecessor to water-skiing and “a popular sport on the Northern Lakes.”
