Description

Mark Twain was born in Florida, Missouri in 1835. A plat of the village is included in this atlas of Monroe County, but today the area is uninhabited. This shows just how much can change over a few short decades, which makes the publishing career of George Ogle all the more impressive.

Headquartered in Chicago, Ogle issued county atlases of areas throughout the Midwest from the 1880’s into the 1920’s. He issued this example late in his career, but it shares similar characteristics with his earlier atlases. A distinctive globe border surrounds bold and legible maps showing property ownership in towns, villages, and townships in the county. Transportation routes, prominent buildings, and geographic features are labeled in addition to the names of land owners. Photographs and advertisements reflect patrons who bought advance subscriptions of the atlas, or who paid to have their information included in its publication. The volume also includes double page lithographed maps of Missouri, the United States, and the World.
