Description

This finely engraved map of St. Louis shows the city on the banks of the Mississippi River shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War. Original hand color distinguishes the twelve wards, while finely engraved text identifies streets, important buildings, and public squares.

Railroads and streetcar tracks are noted, and several streets feature small dotted lines representing a third form of transportation – horse drawn cars, perhaps?

The map was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in 1867 for inclusion in his New General Atlas.
