Description

This lively pictorial view of St. Louis, Missouri was illustrated by an artist named Dodds (signed, lower right) and published in 1978 by the Scarborough, Ontario-based Archar, Inc. The image presents an interesting and contemporary compilation of civic pride, small business advertising, and artistic flair.

Dozens of iconic landmarks, important businesses, and private industries are illustrated and labeled across the page, which features the iconic St. Louis Arch and the Mississippi River in the foreground. Other notable attractions include Busch Stadium, Six Flags, and Anheuser-Busch Headquarters (tours daily!) Animated characters, many caricatures of local business owners, are engaged in a variety of (often amusing) conversations and activities. Two of the city’s most famous statues – the Pierre Laclede Statue and the Apotheosis of St. Louis, can be seen in the lower corners.
