Description
This rather skeletal mid-19th century map of Michigan was issued to catalog the ongoing progress of surveying the state. Both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas are divided into a series of boxes, representing townships, with each containing a series of symbols. These reflect the status of subdivision, field notes, plat recordings, resurveys, and defective surveys as described in the accompanying legend. An inset shows Isle Royale, adjacent to the National Boundary.
The map was published by the General Land Office in 1853, under the direction of Surveyor General Leander Chapman.

Condition Description: Single-sided sheet professionally repaired, cleaned, and mounted onto linen for preservation and stability. Several irregular closed tears through the Upper Peninsula remain faintly visible, along with some seams from old folds and minor marginal wear. Good condition overall.
