Description
Edward Fitzgerald was an American-British explorer and mountaineer who led the first successful European expedition to summit Mt. Aconcagua in 1896 and 1897. Though Fitzgerald personally financed the adventure and made eight separate attempts over a 3 month period, he was unsuccessful in ascending to the peak (the tallest in the Americas) himself; but a Swiss guide and two other local porters were able to clamber to the top.
This contour map documenting the expedition was published the year after Fitzgerald returned. The route is boldly noted and elevations are provided, including the 23,080 ft. summit of Aconcagua. An inset map immediately below shows the relative position of the mountain to a larger region of Argentina and includes major transportation routes.
