Description
The 1960s and 70s experienced a surge in high-octane thrill rides, and the Six Flags Company was well poised to capitalize on the trend. The first park, Six Flags Over Texas, was opened in 1961, and additional locations in Georgia and Missouri began operations in 1967 and 1971, respectively. All three followed the same theme as the original – six sections approximating the former governing bodies of the states.
The “flags” of Missouri, USA, Spain, Illinois, and England can be seen on this illustrated map, published for the opening season of Six Flags Mid-America (today Six Flags St. Louis). Areas reflecting each are noted within the image, which also shows rides, attractions, and guest amenities. Highlights include Krofft’s Puppet Theater, Injun Joe’s Cave, River King Mine, and Mississippi Adventure.
