Description
The gelatin silver print was issued as a wirephoto by the Associated Press to accompany a November 11, 1972 article about a plane hijacking that took place the day before in Birmingham, Alabama. Three men facing criminal charges brandished handguns aboard Southern Airways Flight 49 and forced a wild journey across the United States and into Canada.
The caption describes the ordeal through the plane’s landing in Knoxville, where the hijackers received about $2 million of the demanded $10 million ransom. A second excerpt taped to the back confirms the plane successfully landed in Havana afterward (the hijackers were caught and arrested).
