Description

This is one of at least four similar maps that track the path of specific elements from the 344th Engineer Regiment, in this case E (other examples I’ve seen show Companies A, B, D, and H&S). The impressive cartographic output when compared to other units of similar size, may have something to do with the accessibility of mapmaking equipment.

A brightly colored political map of Europe is overlaid with red lines that highlight the course of E Company from its arrival in England in July 1942 to occupation duty in Germany three years later. Campaigns across North Africa, Italy, and France are represented simply and straightforwardly, with small labels noting points of major action. The Italian peninsula was so action-packed that it required a special key.

The original artist is uncredited, but the map was published in 1945 by Moullot Marseille. All examples are scarce, and E Company is listed only once in WorldCat as of April 2025, at Texas A&M University.
