Description

This well-executed historic map covers the Mid-Atlantic stomping grounds of Robert E. Lee across the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Locations of particular relevance to the general – battlefields, birthplace, and burial site – are labeled throughout the otherwise sparse map. The sheet’s aesthetic is elevated with the inclusion of several vignettes that document important (though largely fictionalized) scenes from Lee’s life.

While best known for his surrender at Appomattox; participation in the Mexican-American War, engineering improvements, and the campus of Washington & Lee University are among his other celebrated accolades. A detailed genealogical chart of Robert E. Lee is provided in the lower left, next to a brief chronology of his life. Designed and published by Karl Smith in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1949.
