Rand McNally Official 1922-1923 Auto Trails Map District No. 1 [and] District No. 2

There were a lot of places to buy a Buick in the Midwest during the early 1920s!

This double-sided map covering much of the Midwest’s road system was published in 1922 by the Rand McNally Company. The Chicago-based firm issued a number of ‘Auto Trails’ maps during the late 1910s and 1920s, providing a rudimentary overview of the highway network across the U.S. (divided into separate districts). This version includes District No. 1 (Illinois, Western Indiana, Southeastern Iowa, and Northeastern Missouri) and District No. 2 (Eastern Illinois, Southern Michigan, Indiana, Western Ohio, and Northern Kentucky).

Each side of the sheet shows primary auto routes, distances between points, and the population of towns, large and small. State road signs and markers for the aforementioned auto trails are also provided, highlighting the chaotic, overlapping system before the introduction of the National Numbered Highway System in 1926. Red dots indicate the location of Buick dealerships – most cities with populations of 4,000 or more have a supplier noted.
