Description

This interesting little folding map shows the routes in operation and connecting lines of the Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railroad. The primary line connects to the New York Central & St. Louis Railway at Pittsburgh Junction and continues to Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

Connections are shown extending to the Atlantic Coast and as far west as Chicago, St. Louis, and Minneapolis. Of note are the geographic distortions of state size, particularly in the northeast.

At the time it was issued, the company operated as part of the Alphabet Route – a collection of independent companies (other than the Big Four) designed to connect the rail systems of the Midwest and Northeast.

The map was published in Buffalo by the J.W. Clement Company around 1955. Dated using the presence of the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railroad (C.I. & L.), which was officially renamed the Monon Railroad in 1956.
