Description
This steel engraved map exhibiting outline color, applied by hand, was originally published by Baldwin & Craddock in 1834 on behalf of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Though the copyright date remains the same, the updated publisher at the bottom of the sheet indicates this is a later version, as the plates were acquired and republished by Chapman & Hall between 1842 and 1844.
The image covers the United States and Canada east of the Mississippi River, with the contents from each page in the atlas outlined and assigned a Roman numeral. Tables of statistics include populations for the British colonies and American states, with the latter including slave totals according to the census of 1830.
Diagrams showing the elevation profiles of major canals are also provided in the lower left, though by the time of publication the railroad had begun to outpace the canal as the preferred method of transportation across North America.
