Description
This colorful pictorial map of the Big Easy was illustrated by Tom Dodds and published by the Scarborough, Ontario-based Archar, Inc. in 1976. The firm issued similar maps of numerous cities across the United States and Canada; part commercial advertising, part civic celebration.
Dozens of businesses across New Orleans are illustrated and labeled, from large international corporations to small family restaurants and retailers. The Mighty Mississippi River is bristling with activity – cargo ships, dredges, and paddle steamers crowd the water.
Numerous caricatured figures are engaged in a variety of conversations, ranging from historic tidbits to local features. Pistol Pete Maravich is proudly representing the short-lived New Orleans Jazz (1974 – 1979) – one of many contemporary elements that make Archar’s productions so interesting. A lively and festive commemoration of New Orleans, all enclosed within a distinctive wrought iron border.
