Scarce and stunning lithographed map of Martha’s vineyard.

This impactful map of the famous island just south of Cape Cod was designed in a style reminiscent of much older cartographic material. Profiles of sailing ships, “hatched” oceans, a decorative compass rose and a pseudo “cartes-a-figures” border all add classical map elements to this view celebrating the rich history of Martha’s Vineyard.

Text taken from Gosnold’s account of landing on the island surrounds the map, providing concrete testimony in addition to the visual persuasion. The image was drawn by Consuelo Joerns, an illustrator and fine artist who creates children’s books in addition to pictorial maps.
