Description
This street map of Traverse City, Michigan was first published in the mid-1940’s by the Michigan branch of the Automobile Association of America (AAA). It was issued at a large scale (approximately 1″ to 1000′) and shows a number of interesting details found in the home of the National Cherry Festival, including one of Michigan’s earliest artificially lit football stadiums – Thrilby Park.
This particular example was customized for use in the Central Engineering Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and has been dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and ease of storage. Vivid color has also been applied by hand, and a custom legend added in the upper right identifying railroad track ownership across the city.
The area under control of the Penn R.R. is shown in bright red, while other local operators such as the Pere Marquette Railway and Manistee and Northeastern Railroad are shown in purple and green, respectively. Additional annotations in black ink identify the location of the P.R.R. Yard.
