Map of the Plant System of Railway, Steam, and Steamship Lines and Connections

This scarce 1893 pocket map shows the various operational lines of The Plant System stretching across South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Cuba. Primary steamship and railway routes are highlighted in bright red, with a host of other connection options identified according to the legend in the center right. Soft pink color distinguishes (perhaps exaggerates) the extent of vast phosphate deposits recently discovered. Mining the valuable ore, used extensively as a fertilizer, began in the 1880s and was a significant source of revenue in freight traffic along the Plant System. An inset in the lower left presents the southern tip of Florida, with the steamship connection between Tampa and Havana.

Henry Plant’s (1819 – 1899) entrepreneurial spirit revolutionized the economy of the southeast in the late 19th century. He began by acquiring or leasing smaller railroads that were struggling financially after the Civil War. In 1882, he founded the Plant Investment Company and organized a fleet of steamship lines three years later. To this expanding empire he added a number of luxurious hotels, designed to encourage wealthy New Englanders to travel south for extended seasonal vacations. The year before he died, Plant was called King of Florida by Success Magazine for the incredible development he brought to the state. A table below the legend provides statistics on the scope of the Plant System at the time of publication. It was comprised of over 2,700 miles split nearly evenly between railroads and steamships.

The map was published by the Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, New York in 1893. Scarce and unlisted in WorldCat as of June 2024. Examples have been identified at the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, and Rollins College.
