Description

This detailed map of the United States highlights the network of lines in operation by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in the late 19th century. The company was chartered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1850 and would eventually grow to encompass nearly 6,000 miles of track during running across the American South during its 130+ years of service (amazingly, all under the same name).

The image shows company lines in red, running far beyond the original connecting cities to places like Cincinnati, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, and Pensacola. Dozens of stops are crammed along the length of each line – it’s possible the state borders were deliberately skewed to accommodate the vast amount of text necessary. Even so, it can be difficult to read in places.

Elsewhere, the map depicts topography with delicate hachure, emphasizing the Appalachian Mountains and the rugged terrain in the West. An interesting contemporary mix of settlements, geographic features, and military forts are labeled. Inset maps in the lower corners show railroads throughout Mexico and southern Florida, with steamship connections to Cuba.

Printed in Louisville by the Courier-Journal Job Printing Co. in 1894 on behalf of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
