Description

This attractive copperplate engraved print shows the hill situated about 75 miles southeast of Rome known as Monte Cassino. The location is most famous as the site on which the Benedictine Order of Monks was established by Benedict of Nursia in the 6th century AD.

This view, published in Paris by Nicholas de Fer about 1,200 years later, shows the distinctive outline of the still-active monastery atop the hill. Other nearby locations of interest are also depicted and labeled, in addition to the nearby road to Rome (highlighted in yellow).

A lengthy text description (in French) can be seen immediately below the image. The building was destroyed during World War II, but was subsequently rebuilt and can be visited to this day.
