Description

This uncommon and beautiful map of Kauai was illustrated by J. Dawson (signed, lower left) and published by Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan in 1976. The poster was one of several drawn by Dawson or Darrel Millsap and issued as promotional items for the banking firm (pictured, lower right).

The toponyms are illustrated in a striking, blocklike text that’s nearly as dramatic as the pictorial depiction of the island’s stunning geography. Lush mountain peaks rise above the coastal plains, topped by Mt. Waialeale – at 5,080 ft, it’s claimed as the ‘Wettest Place on Earth’ (though this is actually probably in northeast India, based on average annual rainfall). Sailing ships in the lower left reflect the arrival of Captain Cook and Western civilization (presented as a positive development), which ‘evolved’ into the modern Kauai shown before you.
