Description

This lovely vintage guidebook to the northern reaches of Maine was published in 1939 by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and printed in Boston by the Rand Avery Company. Its 124 pages are introduced with a letter from Lewis Barrows, governor, who encourages attendees to the World’s Fair that year (held in New York) to “visit the Pine Tree State and enjoy the natural blessings with which the State has been endowed.”

Subsequent pages show photographs, tables of statistics, and informative text detailing Maine’s economic and recreational opportunities. Contemporary advertisements are included throughout and provide a wonderful charm to the publication.

Also included is a folding map of northeast Maine highlighting the lines of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad between Searsport and the border with New Brunswick. The map was created by the Prentiss & Carlisle Company, Inc. of Bangor and labels lakes, towns, train stations, and more.
