Description

This technically sophisticated geological map of the Mont Blanc massif (Il Quaternario Nella Catena del Monte Bianco) was authored by the eminent geologist Federico Sacco and published by Lit. Salussolia in 1939. Originally issued as a specialized supplement to a memorandum for the Academy of Sciences in Torino, the map serves as an authoritative record of the glacial composition of the highest range in the Alps.

Vibrant printed color highlights the masses of glaciers in a rich blue, while deposits, groundwater debris, dejection cones, and moraine terrain are shown in red. An interesting combination of contoured topography and shaded relief accurately depicts the Mont Blanc massif. Numerous peaks are labeled along with their respective heights (in meters), while a “Diagram of the Oscillations of the Glaciers” charts the advance and retreat of the ice fields from the 16th century onwards.
