Description

This blueprint-style map shows Huron County – the northernmost part of Michigan’s eastern region known colloquially as ‘The Thumb.’ It was drawn by L.L. Beavers and originally issued by the engineering firm of W.W. Lavers.

Writing on the verso of the sheet indicates this example was part of the County Road Commission and is marked June 25, 1926. Earlier that year, the State Highway Department assumed the entire cost of constructing and maintaining the highway system.

The map shows both State Trunk Lines and County Trunk Lines, with completed, planned, and roads under construction shown according to the legend in the upper left. Towns, railroads, gravel beds, and other locations of interest are also noted within the image.

Map Details

Publication Date: 1926

Author: L.L. Bateman

Sheet Width (in): 38.4

Sheet Height (in): 24.2

Condition: B+

Condition Description: Creasing along originally issued fold lines and wear, discoloration, and old manuscript writing visible on the verso that does not affect the image. A light damp stain is evident to the lower right of the legend and there are a few small tears along the outer edges of the sheet. Appears to be an old copy of an earlier map (note the 'holes' in the corners), but the writing on the verso dates this copy to 1926.
