This pocket-sized guide provides all the information needed for a summer tourist to Maine in the early 1920s. While the primary emphasis is on the new motorist class (including the fold-out route map), there are steamship, railroad, and trolley timetables, lists of hotels and theaters, recommended trips, and much more. Of interest is the description of Maine’s auto trails before the introduction of the numbered highway system and a comprehensive list of Portland churches (nearly fifty in total!).
The booklet was published in Portland in 1921 by H.H. Hay Sons, the 25th year for the popular guide. The H.H. Hay Company was founded in 1841 by Henry Hay and quickly established itself as a successful wholesale and retail drug business/apothecary. After Hay’s death in 1895, the business was carried on by his sons under the name H.H. Hay & Sons. Several advertisements show various products, including concentrated fruit syrups, paint, hand lotion, and Whitman’s chocolates.

Condition Description: Small 38 pp. booklet with stapled binding and original blue paper wraps. Several small punch holes puncture the front cover and affect the contents, either with a tiny gash or indentation. The fold-out map, 8.4" x 5.5" hs a few dents, but it otherwise in fine shape. Good condition overall.
