This beautiful collage replicates (some, abstractly) the views available to passengers aboard Switzerland’s historic St. Gotthard Railway. Awe-inspiring bridges span breathtaking gorges, picturesque resort towns, spectacular alpine landscapes, and interesting architecture can be had from the comforts of a luxurious traincar, speeding from Lucerne to Milan in a mere six hours!
Unusually, the assembly of scenic views does not appear to include any depiction of the jaw-dropping Gotthard Tunnel. The 9+ mile tunnel (the longest in the world when it opened in 1883) functions as the critical link through the Swiss Alps, connecting the northern and southern branches of the network (and, by extension, the rest of Europe).
The verso shows two maps – one is a diagrammatic image that shows the railway network of Germany and Italy (including Paris and London), connected through the single point of the Gotthard Tunnel. The second is a color relief map of Switzerland that shows the Gotthard Railway from Lucerne to Como, the iron rails piercing the snow-peaked mountain range.

Condition Description: Cardstock timetable, printed on both sides and folded-accordion style (size given for entire piece). One panel severely affected by paper residue from an old paste-down. A 1" split along a fold has been repaired with archival material and there is a bit of surface soiling and edge wear. About good condition overall.
